Omarie first connected with Inside Job at HMP Birmingham, and later at HMP YOI Stoke Heath. However, it wasn’t until a month after his release that he reached out to the West Midlands Team, seeking support to pursue the career he had long been aiming for. While at Stoke Heath, he had attended a construction-focused job surgery and kept hold of a business card from one of our Community Consultants.
HOW WE HELPED
After his release, Omarie got in touch, recalling his conversation in prison and eager to see if we could help him take the next step. He also shared that he had recently received his university diploma – a Foundation Diploma in Construction Management – and had gained practical experience through labouring roles with local trades and labour agencies.
With his qualifications and hands-on experience in place, he was ready to pursue a sustainable career that could provide long-term stability.
WHAT CAME NEXT
He mentioned that he had always wanted to work on HS2. We introduced him to our contact at the main contractor Balfour Beatty Vinci, who commented that he seemed “switched on” and were particularly interested in his welding skills, developed while at HMP Stoke Heath. He has now secured a role as a Welder’s Mate at BBV and is well on his way to building a lasting career in the industry.
